Do Dogs Have Seasonal Allergies?

Just about this time of year, when the pollen cloud comes through our area for days on end, I notice something interesting. Callie starts sneezing a bit and starts drinking a ton of water.

Could Callie be self-treating for seasonal allergies? I asked a veterinary specialist about this and he said no, that dogs don’t get hayfever. My experience with Callie tells me otherwise.

What do you think?

Trip to New York

Callie accompanied my husband and I on a trip to New York to visit my sister, who was ill. It was a good trip, but intense in many ways. It took us about 14 hours to get from South Carolina up to New York.  We tried to make good time, but ended up stopping twice for food and bathroom breaks.

Callie did well on the trip. She stayed on my lap on a pillow while my husband drove.  She mostly slept and is a very good traveler.  The hardest part for her was once we got to our destination. We stayed in a hotel for 2 nights and then moved once again to stay with some friends for the duration of our time in NY.

The hotel was a LaQuinta, which if you didn’t know, allows pets to stay in the room with their owners for free. In some ways this is a great thing because it means that we have a place to stay when we travel with our dog.  (Sometimes Daisy comes too, but not this time). In other ways it’s bad though, because lots of other people bring their dogs as well so the room has lots of dog smells in it that drive Callie crazy and make her want to wet on the floor (like apparently those canines who have come before us have done.)

I don’t relish the fact that many dogs have been in the room before us, but at least it’s a place to stay that in most cases is reasonably satisfactory.

By the way, Daisy stayed at home and enlisted the services of a cat sitter who came and fed her and played with her every day. We called the cat sitter at regular intervals to check on Daisy’s well-being and everything went quite well for her. She was friendly to the cat sitter and quite happy to be played with – and of course – fed!

Do They Love Each Other?

Callie and Daisy

I often wonder if Callie and Daisy love each other. Sure enough, they are companions through daily life but sometimes I just really wonder about their relationship.

I’ve heard of stories of a small dog (or even a large dog) and a cat who become closest companions. My two fur kids are not that way. They never rest or sleep together EXCEPT when they are both napping near each other in the sun. I think this is more a function of the small size of the available sunbeam than an affinity for each other.

They can be very competitive (especially when food, toys, or my attention are involved) yet I do think that on some level they “care” about each other. I think it would be so interesting to have real insight into what they were thinking or feeling towards each other.

Callie and the Computer

Now for a little light-hearted discussion regarding Callie after the very serious introductory post about her. Callie has been around me and my computer for quite some time.

Being the inquisitive girl that she is, one day she decided to try it out my wireless mouse for herself and surf the Internet. I think she’s got “Internet addiction” now.

See what you think:

Introducing Callie

Our Little Callie

Callie is our little 7 pound dog. She has been with us for awhile, but not for as long as Daisy.

Callie came to be “my” dog indirectly, I guess. First of all, I have always had BIG dogs. In fact I was fairly biased against small dogs and found them to be nervous and annoying.  My daughter convinced us that she really just HAD to have a dog and it needed to be just like her friend’s dog. Somehow after insisting that I didn’t want another living thing to take care of, and I didn’t want a little dog, I ended up with both of those things! I’m sure my readers understand how this can happen. :)

Introducing Daisy

Our Daisy

Daisy is our lively gray cat. She has graced our lives for quite some time now. She is an intelligent and active girl. She has a quirky “personality” and is very loving, until you cross her. She’ll be sitting on your lap purring away, but if you need to get up or move her, she will hiss and scratch you in the blink of an eye!

Don’t get me wrong – Daisy is friendly, interactive and mostly gentle. She loves meeting new people and enjoys running around all over the house. She is a beautiful cat with a kind of wild look look in her eyes.
